As the January transfer window draws ever close, Arsenal’s move for Mats Hummels is itching ever closer, this is after various reports that the Borussia Dortmund defender has snubbed Manchester United with a view to joining Arsenal instead. The German international is said to have been swayed by the chance of playing with the other Germans in the current Arsenal team. So far there is Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Serge Gnabry as Germans who are in the books at Arsenal.
Both Arsenal and Manchester United are expected to move for defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window. This is after both sides’ struggles in defence since the current season started. While Arsenal’s current situation has been exacerbated by the long term injuries to Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny, the situation at Old Trafford has been a distinct lack of quality at the back.
With speculations that Arsenal are now ahead of the queue to sign the 25 year old from Borussia Dortmund, it gives Arsene Wenger the edge in a bid to address one of the ills that has ached Arsenal all season.
There are however reservations in some quarters as to the veracity of the claims in media circles that Mats Hummels has indeed chosen Arsenal ahead of other clubs. Arsenal’s defensive struggles coupled with Arsene Wenger’s comments during the club’s AGM that he would make amends in January has led many to link several defenders to the club. And the Mats Hummels speculations have been at the top of all the prescient in the English tabloids.
The Dortmund captain is expected to cost in the region of £30 million, which is just short of the Premier League record for a defender. The record stands at £32 million, being the fee paid by Manchester City to sign Equilam Mangala from Porto in the summer.
While uncertainty still trails the stories linking him to the Emirates, the truthfulness and otherwise of the speculations could be gleaned from the various tweets that have trailed the speculations in recent days.
It doesn’t matter if Arsenal sign Hummels. Wenger will play Mertesacker and Koscielny anyway
What this means is that the speculations linking Mat Hummels to Arsenal have shifted from the corridors of the media to the circles of the social media where the discussions is mostly on the veracity of the stories about his turning down Manchester United in favour of a move to Arsenal. The picture is expected to become clear as time passes as there is not much left to wait before the January transfer window opens. Added to that, there is still the sub plot of Borussia Dortmund’s meeting with Arsenal in the Champions League later this month.
