Abia retirees demand five years teachers’ pension arrears

Pensioners in Abia State have called on the Federal Government to pay the arrears of over five years’ pension due to retired primary school teachers in the state, without further delay.
The call formed part of a four-point communiqué issued at the end of the meeting of the state council of the NIGERIA Union of Pensioners, held on Thursday in Umuahia.

The communiqué, which was made available to Daily Independent in Umuahia, stated that the Federal Government owed the affected retirees five and a half years’ arrears of pension.
The communiqué, jointly signed by the union’s state chairman and secretary, Chukwuma Udensi and O.C. Anyanwu, respectively, stated that the arrears would help to alleviate the plight of the affected pensioners.
It further called for the early pay-rolling of retired primary school teachers in order to enable them to begin to receive their pensions soon after their retirement.
The pensioners also appealed to Gov. Theodore Orji to ameliorate their sufferings in the state by “regular payment of pensions, gratuity and harmonisation arrears.”
