Education summit begins in Abuja today

A week-long National Education Summit, aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s education system and, which is put together by stakeholders in education sector, led by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), begins today in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Chairman, Planning Committee and former ASUU President, Dipo Fashina, in a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan at the weekend, said the summit had as theme, ‘Towards a System of Education for Liberation in Nigeria’, and would hold at the Conference Hall, Top Rank Hotel, Utako District, Abuja.

Other stakeholders involved in the summit, according to the statement, are the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), saying they are in collaboration with federal and state ministries of education and civil society groups.
Fashina explained that for the country to be a stakeholder in the global system, it must restructure its educational system to promote development, adding, “the summit will review the educational system with a view to restructuring it to liberate Nigerians.
“The educational system is one-sided, promoting the interests of the world’s powers, who colonised Africa, making the need to develop an educational system, which can serve the interests of Nigerians a necessity.
“The four main unions in tertiary institutions are organising a national education summit, the purpose of which is to look for what will be a liberating educational system in the country.
“Education in Nigeria is dysfunctional; it is one sided in the sense that it promotes the interests of the powers in the world, who have ruled Africa since slavery and after slavery.
