Waste managers solicit cooperation of Lagos residents

Lagos State Chairman, Association of Waste MANAGERS (AWAM), Mr. Bode Coker, on Thursday urged Lagos residents to exercise patience on the delay in picking their refuse.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that rainfall in parts of Lagos has been affecting the operation of waste disposal at designated dumpsites.

“The rainy season is affecting the turnaround of waste MANAGERS, the dumpsites are not good but the Lagos Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) is trying to make it WORK. Many of our trucks have been damaged at the dumpsite and we are discussing with LAWMA and the stakeholders to find quick solution to the problem.

“People should be patient with us for a little time because the rain, falling everyday, is making the road to be slippery. This is causing trucks to fall. So, we appeal for their understanding,’’ Coker urged.

He counselled residents to ensure proper bagging of their wastes and warned against the use of cart pushers.

He assured that areas not reached by the waste managers would be covered by LAWMA backup trucks to ensure a filth-free environment.

“We understand the danger of the heaps of refuse generated after the monthly sanitation exercise. All we ask is that it should be properly bagged and kept neatly, from littering the environment, to avoid epidemics,’’ Coker said.
