Financial autonomy for state assemblies underway –Ikon

Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Samuel Ikon, has said state assemblies across the country would begin to enjoy financial autonomy as currently enjoyed by the National Assembly.
Speaking with newsmen in his office on Tuesday, the speaker said the clause that would ensure financial independence of state legislators have been included in the current amendment of the 1999 Constitution by the National Assembly.
It would be recalled that the National Assembly, in 2012, held public hearing on the amendment of the 1999 Constitution where the issue of financial autonomy for state assemblies and local government was articulated by the people.

Ikon commended the National Assembly for listening to the cries of the people and taking a step to insert the clause in the proposed amendment, which was recently handed over to state assemblies through the Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, Samuel Ikon.
Speaking on the perception of members of the public that the governors have pocketed the state assemblies, the speaker pointed out that the Akwa Ibom State Government under Godswill Akpabio has done so well that it would amount to madness for anyone to oppose him.
“In my constituency, he has constructed roads, which was last done about 25 years ago as well as commence technical education in one of the schools, which lost its technical status many years ago. How can we that represent the people oppose a man that has done so much for the people,” he queried.
Ikon also commended the President for some bold decisions taken, which are aimed at improving the lives of Nigerian. He listed one of the areas in which the Federal Government has intervened as agriculture where middlemen have been removed in the distribution of fertilisers to farmers.
“Now the farmers get fertilisers direct from the government and this has boosted crop yield, as farmers now get the product on time,” he stated.
