FG Approves Sea Port for Ondo

The federal government has approved an international inland seaport to be established at River Alape in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The state Commissioner for Information, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, announced this in Akure, the state capital, on Monday while speaking with journalists.
He said approval for the citing of the port in Alape was announced at the 14th National Council meeting on Transport in Enugu State, adding that the federal government hinged its decision on the need to establish a river port in Alape on its potential transportation and empowerment generation.
He stated that approval had earlier been given for the establishment of the river port at the 13th National Council meeting on Transport held in Lagos last year, stressing further that there had also been a progress report from the state Ministry of Transport to that effect.

Following the development, he said the reapproval was given  to the state government to collaborate with the federal government in order to expedite action on the take-off of the Alape River Port in Ilaje.
He said final approval for the establishment of the seaport came following resolution of the members of the National Council on Transport during their plenary section this year.
The National Council on Transport is the highest decision making body on transport related matters which comprises all the Commissioners for Transport in the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Ministry of Transport Permanent Secretaries.
Members of the council also include directors of relevant agencies and parastatals, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), VIO, National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and all relevant stakeholders in the transport sectors across the nation.
Explaining the importance of the body, Akinmade said the National Council on Transport is very significant as it formulate policies on transport as a critical sector for people to comply with in order to save lives, make transportation easy and make traveling from one city to the other or from one nation to the another safe, secure and affordable.
