No law restricts parties on fund raising – Fasehun

National Chairman of the resuscitated Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Dr. Fredrick Fasehun, has stated that there is no provision in the electoral law that restricts political parties on fund raising. Fasehun who spoke with Daily Independent, was responding to criticisms that greeted the over N21 billion raised by PDP for its presidential campaign recently.

“I have a copy of the electoral guideline with me here, I don’t see any where it put a ceiling on how much a political party could raise for its campaign,” he said. According to Fasehun, the guideline only put a limitation on the amount an individual can raise for its campaign and other political activities.
The amount specified in the guidelines depends on the type of election or the position being sought by the person.
“For example, you cannot expect somebody aspiring to the office of a governor to spend the same amount with a senatorial candidate,” he said. Fasehun further stated that UPN is prepared to receive donations from those who are sympathetic to course of the party provided it is done in accordance to constitution of the party.
He identified lawlessness, indiscipline and impunity as responsible for corruption in the country. He said every effort to tackle corruption would amount to chasing shadows if lawlessness, indiscipline and immunity remain our ways of life. “Successive government in Nigeria failed to fight corruption successfully because they failed to do what is right”.
Fasehun who is also the founder of Odu’a People’s Congress (OPC), stated that his interest in resuscitating UPN was to revive the ideology of the late Obafemi Awolowo.
“I am not interested in any elective position,  I will be 80 years by my next birthday. My interest is to encourage the younger ones to take over from us”.
