4,000 to participate in Community Day celebration

No fewer than 14,000 grassroots members and market men and women will participate in this year’s grand finale of the Community Day celebration in Lagos.
Commissioner for Rural Development, Cornelius Ojelabi, who disclosed this at the weekend, said the grand finale of the celebration would hold on Thursday, November 13, 2014.
The theme of the celebration is ‘Community Mobilisation: Panacea for Security Challenges’.
Ojelabi said celebration would feature over 14, 000 participants from over 3,000 Community Development Associations  (CDAs) in the state as well as market women and men, road transport workers associations, artisans, Non-Governmental Organisations, among others.


“Prizes are expected to be awarded to three CDAs that are outstanding in their contribution to the development of their communities by the Governor of the State, Babatunde Fashola, on the occasion while 20 other CDAs would also be given grants-in-aid for their efforts,” he stated.
Activities lined up for the week are visits to the Olubukola Fowowe Memorial Children Centre at Ogba and Old People’s Home at Yaba; handing over of rural projects to rural communities in Ikorodu, Epe, Lagos Island, Badagry, Oto-Awori and Ibeju-Lekki areas of the state.
Ojelabi explained Community Day is a day set aside by the United Nations to celebrate and appreciate CDAs for their role in the development of their various communities.
The commissioner said from the first celebration till date, a lot of innovations and glamour had been introduced, which had metamorphosed from just a day celebration to about 12 days event in honour of the CDAs for their role in partnering with the state government in improving the lots of the people.
As part of the activities marking the celebration, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Babatunde Hunpe, led officials of the ministry to pay a visit to the Olubukola Fowowe Memorial Children Centre at Ogba where items such as beddings, clothes and others were donated to the less privileged children.
Hunpe said the items were donated as part of activities marking the Community Day and for officials of the ministry to fellowship with the less privileged children.
