Crisis: Mahama leads delegation to Burkina Faso

Chairman, ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government and President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, will, on Wednesday November 5, 2014, lead two other Heads of State in the region to Burkina Faso in the efforts at engaging all the stakeholders to restore legitimate transitional government.
Already, a joint mission of the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU) and ECOWAS had visited Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, between October 31 and November 1, 2014, towards finding a lasting peace in the country.
Mahama, in a statement on Monday in Abuja by the President of ECOWAS Commission, Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, reiterated ECOWAS’ preparedness to cooperate with the people of Burkina Faso to proffer sustainable solution to the current political impasse and pave way for conduct of free and credible elections.

“As a follow up, the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, accompanied by two Heads of State, would visit Ouagadougou on Wednesday, 5 November 2014 to meet with all the stakeholders. Further to his declaration of 30th October 2014, ECOWAS Chairman appeals to all stakeholders and the military to find a consensual solution in line with the provisions of the constitution of Burkina Faso.
“The ECOWAS Chairman also reaffirms the readiness of ECOWAS to cooperate with Burkina Faso and others to restore legitimate transitional order, accompanying the stakeholders in finding sustainable solutions to the impasse and work towards organising free and credible elections.”
“Mahama has approved the recommendations of the joint mission pledging ECOWAS’ support for peaceful restoration of constitutional order in Burkina Faso.
“The Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government was briefed about the outcome of the Joint Mission of the United Nations, the African Union and ECOWAS to Ouagadougou from 31 October to 2 November 2014,” the statement said.
