US hostage killed during rescue mission in Yemen

American hostage Luke Somers, who was held by al-Qaeda in Yemen, has died during a rescue operation in the southern province of Shabwa, a senior official in the president’s office has said.
Somers, 33, who was abducted in September 2013 while he worked as a freelance photojournalist for Yemen Times, died from injuries sustained during the operation.
The New York Times said Somers was shot at by his captors as the joint raid by US and Yemeni forces unfolded and was badly wounded when the commandos reached him. He died while being blown to a US naval base in the region.

4 Israelis killed in Jerusalem synagogue attack

JERUSALEM (AP) — Two Palestinians stormed a Jerusalem synagogue on Tuesday, attacking worshippers praying inside with knives, axes and guns, and killing four. Police killed the attackers in a shootout.
The attack was the deadliest in Jerusalem in years and is bound to ratchet up fears of sustained violence in the city, already on edge amid soaring tensions over a contested holy site.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said six people were also wounded in the attack, including two police officers. He said police were searching the area for other suspects.

ABUJA, Nov 16, (AFP): The Nigerian army said Sunday it had recaptured the northeastern town of Chibok, where Islamic militants abducted more than 200 schoolgirls in April, provoking a wave of global outrage. Control of Chibok is crucial to the reputation of the government of President Goodluck Jonathan and the military, which have both come under fire at home and abroad for their failure to rescue the girls.

The US military is reportedly monitoring a fleet of Russian warships in waters off Australia's northeastern coast after President Vladimir Putin arrived for the G20 summit.
The Australian reported on Friday that several American warships and a US submarine were observing the Russian warships.
The US surface warships keep watching on the four Russian vessels near Japan as they headed south, according to the report.
The US and the Australian Defense Force have been in close contact over the group’s progress, said the report.
