College tuition in the U.S. rises faster than inflation, again

College prices in the U.S. have again increased faster than the rate of inflation, extending a decades-long pattern of higher-education costs.
Tuition and fees at private nonprofit colleges climbed 3.7 percent on average to $31,231 this academic year, according to a report today by the College Board. For in-state residents at four-year public schools, costs rose 2.9 percent to $9,139. Inflation, measured by the personal consumption expenditures index, rose 1.4 percent in the year through September.

Public varsities, polytechnics fail to access N7b TETFund grants

Amid concerns of under-funding of public educational institutions in Nigeria, the Federal Government has decried the inability of most universities and technical institutions to access research grants of over N7.8 billion from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, who made this disclosure in Abuja, Thursday, said it was lamentable that the trend persists within the academic community despite the fact that research work ought to remain the cardinal objective of tertiary institutions the world over.

Hold leaders accountable for good governance, NASU tells journalists

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has urged journalists in the country to hold the nation’s leaders accountable for good governance in line with the constitutional backing of the profession
NASU’s General Secretary, Comrade Peters Adeyemi made the declaration at a capacity building workshop organized by NASU in collaboration with the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC)  in Ibadan, Oyo State
His words: “We call on journalists in the country to hold the nation’s leaders accountable to good governance because the management of information in the public space in Nigeria is central to the measure of effectiveness and degree of progress that can be generated in a socio-economic and political setting.”

COAS briefs Senate on insecurity

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Kenneth Minimah, on Thursday, admitted that some local government areas of the North East were lost to the Boko Haram but assured that such areas would soon be recovered by the military.
A Senate Committee had invited the service chiefs including the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, Chief of Army Staff, Major General Kenneth Minimah, Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Usman Jibrin, and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adeola Amosu, to brief its members on the state of affairs in the Northeast with regard to the fight against Boko Haram.

Military Helicopter Crashes in Yola

A few days after a military helicopter on a surveillance mission crashed in Damare, a suburb of Girei Local Government Area of the state, another has crashed in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
An account by several online journals says the helicopter, believed to have met its fatal end late on Thursday, stalled in the sky for a while before crashing to the ground in a ball of fire.
There has been no independent confirmation.
