Court remands Togolese in prison over alleged murder

An Ikeja High Court on Tuesday remanded a Togolese, Benjamin Sunday, in prison for allegedly stabbing one Gbenga Adigun to death with a broken bottle.
Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye remanded the 18-year-old accused at the Kirikiri Medium Prisons, Apapa, after his arraignment by the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sunday, who lives at No. 4, Haruna Street, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, is facing a one-count charge of murder.
The state prosecutor, Mr Akin George, said Sunday committed the offence on June 2, 2013 at Harmony Estate, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos.

George said that a dispute between the accused and Adigun degenerated into a fight and the former thereafter stabbed his opponent with a broken bottle, which led to his death.
The prosecutor said that the offence committed by Sunday contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
The offence of murder attracts the death penalty.
Sunday, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Following the arraignment, George urged the court to grant the matter an accelerated hearing because it was a murder charge.
He said the prosecution had listed four witnesses to testify against the accused.
The judge acceded to his request and consequently adjourned the matter till December 15 and 16, for trial.
