85% of Benue youths are jobless -Ortom

Benue State governorship aspirant and the immediate past Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Samuel Ortom, has said that 85 per cent of Benue youths are unemployed.

He also said if elected he will implement a five-point agenda aimed at empowering the youths.
The former minister disclosed this during his homecoming and public declaration to contest the governorship election of the state come 2015 in Makurdi the state’s capital.
Ortom who was speaking against the backdrop of adject poverty and idleness existing among the youths in the state, assured the crowd of his determination to curb the menace.

He said, “The greatest challenges of youths in Benue state remain poverty and unemployment. At least 75 per cent of Benue youths are poor and 85 per cent are unemployed.
“This leads to their marginalisation, alienation, dispossession and exclusion, this is sad and totally unacceptable because high poverty and unemployment among youth threatens social stability.
“Indeed, the study shows that there is a nexus between youth poverty, unemployment and insecurity, this is because large cohorts of unemployed or underemployed young people destabilise their societies, fuel crime and creating conditions where civil conflict became more likely.”
